Slate Roofing
natural and man-made:
Slate roofing can be both natural material or man-made (cement fibre) that is rigid and strong like a piece of glass.
With the natural variety, depending on where the slate roof was quarried, the qualities, color and longevity vary. It is fireproof, strong enough to resist hail storms, looks very attractive and last over 100 years. Slate is a fine grained metamorphic rock. Its main constituents are quartz, chlorite, mica & calcite. Slate is formed when ocean or riverbed sediments are compressed and heated by the earth’s crust.
Unfortunately the introduction of cheaper materials and steep roofs falling out of architectural fashion, have meant that slate roofing is called for less than it was years ago, which is a great shame due to its beauty and durability.
The choice of slate roofing can be made from: sea green slate (a long lasting roof slate that is also known as fading gray-green slate, for its fading color quality due to weathering), purple slate (which keeps to a dark purple color throughout its life), unfading green slate (can last up to 200 years) and black slate (a softer slate roof material), Fibre Cement, Natural Welsh and Natural Spanish. We also work with reclaimed slate.
